Northumbria Police Benevolent Fund

The Northumbria Police Benevolent Fund (Lilian Eve Memorial Trust) is a registered charity (Registration Number 507081) it is independent of the force and is controlled by trustees. The aim of the fund is to provide assistance to members and their families who find themselves in circumstances where they may need of benevolent or financial assistance.

Benefits of the fund can include:

• Grants / interest free loans for members who find themselves in unfortunate circumstances.
• Respite at a luxury holiday cabin in the Lake District.
• Disability related home alterations and specialist equipment.
• Assistance with travel and incidental expenses for members attending a Police treatment centre.

  The NPBF Committee

  The NPBF committee meets on a bi-monthly basis where serving police officers and retired officers are represented by a committee made up of officers from each area command department and retired officers. The committee is made up of volunteers. Applications are decided by the committee and all discussions are confidential. No reason will be given if an application is turned down and there is no appeals process. Urgent applications for assistance are considered between meetings if required.

• How to Join

  How to join

  Membership of the Fund is open to all serving police officers at a cost of £2 per payday, this is deducted at source from your salary. Police pensioners who subscribed to the fund before retirement and officers upon joining are able to call on the benefits of the Fund.
  

  Research shows that 58% of officers are NOT members and for £2 per payday you could receive help when you most need it. The Fund has unfortunately been placed in the position of having to say no to officers and their families who are not members.

  To join the fund please print and complete the appropriate application form and send via email to the fund's treasurer, Insp 7006 Hewitt, please check the intranet for current workbase.

• Applications

  Applications

  Applications are considered by the committee using the below criteria and guidance. This is not a definitive list. Each application is looked at on an individual basis:

  1. Student Officers are given 12 months free before deductions to the fund.
  2. Applications may be made immediately after joining but will not be approved for any pre-existing illness/reason predating the date of joining (date of first payment or receipt of application form in respect of a student officer).
  3. Members residing within the same household will be considered as individuals regarding any applications.
  4. Loan, Grant and Equipment Applications: Applicants cannot apply within 3 years for the same circumstances (3-year rule). For separate incidents/circumstances there must be a 12-month gap between applications
  5. Respite Lodge Applications: Applicants cannot apply within 5 years for the same circumstances (5-year rule). For separate incidents/circumstances there must be a 12-month gap between applications. Any further applications for extraordinary circumstances will be considered with a maximum of 3 visits in total for the same or similar circumstances.
  6. A financial form must accompany all requests for Grants/Loans applicants must show what they have done towards helping themselves resolve any financial difficulty on the application.
  7. For costs of equipment or other expenditure NPBF will pay the supplier directly and not the applicant unless invoices are provided in exceptional circumstances.
  8. All Loans must be repaid within a maximum of 3 years.
  9. To claim Out of Pocket Expenses applicants must provide a payslip.
  10. Out of Pocket Expenses for Police Treatment Centres can only be claimed once in a 12-month period.
  11. Out of Pocket Expenses are £30 per week (i.e., 5 days at Police Treatment Centre).
  12. NPBF do not pay for any Private Medical treatment.
  13. General workload issues are not considered as an application reason.
  14. Divorce / relationship breakdown alone is not considered as an application reason.
